Originally MV Agusta was part of the Agusta aircraft company founded by Count Domenico Agusta. Established in 1945 it was the result of diversification efforts in the post WWII era. In the beginning the motorbikes produced sold mainly to gather means for racing. With time and the main focus shifting back towards aviation there were not only more than enough funds to support racing, but also an influx of new ideas and technologies that could be used in motorcycles. With the Italian Gilera, Moto Guzzi and Mondial withdrawing from the Grand Prix after 1957 the company went on to win 17 500cc World Championships in a row. The death of Count Agusta in 1971 started a decline for MV Agusta and by 1980 the company had sold its last bike. It was revived in 1991 by the Castiglioni family and, despite several ownership changes, as been producing motorcycles ever since.
